The Chappaqua Library's Plant Propagation Station, part of The Library of Things, is thriving!
Since its launch in October 2024, we’ve happily shared over 170 plant cuttings with our patrons.
We need your help to keep this program growing! We invite you to donate cuttings from your own houseplants to support the station.
If you're new to the plant cutting swap, here's how it works: simply bring in a cutting from any indoor plant and drop it off at the Information Desk.
To ensure your cutting is ready for propagation, please follow these simple guidelines:
- Use clean scissors or pruning shears.
- Cut a healthy stem just below a node (the point where a leaf grows).
- Remove the leaves from the bottom of the stem, leaving a few at the top.
- Wrap your cutting in a damp paper towel and place it in a plastic bag to keep it from drying out.
- If you know the name of your plant, please include it! If not, don’t worry—we’ll look it up and label it for the next patron.
Once your cutting is ready, feel free to take one cutting per visit from our display near the front seating area by the large windows. Please be sure to leave the glass jar in place and take advantage of the provided plastic bags and damp paper towels.
When you take a cutting, please mark a tally on the clipboard to help us track the program’s success. We kindly ask that you don’t take potted plants from the library.
We hope you enjoy giving, receiving, and growing beautiful plant cuttings, and thank you for supporting this wonderful community program!
